Who is Superior Street Elementary School?
Superior Elementary is a school that celebrates its diversity. This diversity is embraced by our administration, staff, faculty, students and families. It is what makes us the great success we are. Our huge gains in our academic scores are gains made by EVERY segment of the student body; English native speakers as well as English Language Learners! Our school is a school of inclusion - from children of color to children with special needs…Superior Elementary truly means “no child left behind”.
Superior Elementary is a school whose success is owned by everyone: faculty and staff, families and our business community. Without the ACTIVE PARTICIPATION of ALL of our stakeholders, Superior Elementary’s success would not be possible. We are a school with a legacy of intense volunteerism…no an expectation of volunteerism! So if you enroll your child here…roll up your sleeves and get ready to help!
If I live in Superior Elementary’s district, am I guaranteed a seat for my child?
Neighborhood schools are bound by law to accommodate the residents within their enrollment district first. However, we do URGE you to complete the enrollment process as soon as possible so that we might make available to your child the most academically appropriate classroom placement possible. This can only be assured if you enroll your child EARLY!
What documents do I need to present to enroll my child?
The school will have no copying facilities available to copy documents. If you are planning to turn in your completed packets on that same day, you will need to supply both the original and a copy of the following:
What is the School for Advanced Studies and how do I find out if my child is eligible?
SAS is a program developed by LAUSD to address the education of students who are able to delve into the grade-level curriculum at an “in-depth” level. All Superior Elementary students will be learning the same grade-level curriculum. SAS students will be “digging deeper” into the subject matter with a greater application of the analytical thinking that advanced learners yearn to stay engaged. Eligibility for our SAS screening program is determined by an informal “interview” conducted by our screening personnel on campus. Official SAS classes begin in 3rd grade, however there is a gifted class beginning in 2nd grade.
I do not live in Superior Elementary’s enrollment district. How can I get my child into Superior Elementary?
This year there may be no permits available. First priority for enrollment is given to children residing within our enrollment area. Any remaining spaces will be given first to permit requests from families with siblings of current students. Any other permits are highly unlikely except to fill a space or two in upper grade classrooms.
The school in my enrollment area (resident school) has an SAS program. Can I still apply for an SAS permit for my child to attend Superior Elementary?
No. Only children whose own neighborhood school does not offer an SAS program may apply for an SAS permit to attend Superior Elementary.
My child has been tested as “gifted” by my former school (non-LAUSD). Does he/she have to be re-tested?
Possibly. Please bring all the paperwork in your possession regarding your child’s testing from the other school with you when you turn in your enrollment packet. Our Gifted Coordinator will review it and let you know what additional testing may be needed, if any.
